The digestive system requires bacteria to assist in food break down and easy digestion.  However, bacteria found in and around the mouth when left unchecked can cause bad and fetid breath.  The medical term used to describe this condition is halitosis.

Symptoms of Bad Breath That Can be Cured by Natural Treatments:

–       Foul smelling breath.

–       A white or yellow coat on the tongue.

–       Mouth dryness.

Natural Treatments Cure Bad Breath Caused by:

–       Mouth or throat infections.

–       Dental cavities or dentures.

–       Bleeding gums.

–       Consuming certain foods like garlic, onions, etc.

–       Smoking, excess alcohol abuse, poor oral hygiene.

–       Certain disease conditions.

–       Medications that dry the mouth.

The strong offensive smell emitting from the mouth could be due to poor oral hygiene.  Tooth cavities, bleeding gums, or poor maintenance of the tongue give rise to foul smelling breath.

When the throat, sinuses, and nasal cavities are infected bad breath may occur.

Stomach problems that involve chronic vomiting and acid reflux leads to breath problems.  When the underlying conditions are treated, bad breath resolves.

Treatment Options:

Proper dental care that involve regular brushing, flossing, and tongue scraping is sufficient to keep this problem under control.  Mints, mouth fresheners, and gargles help to minimize bad breath.  However, these may only be temporary if it is caused due to disease conditions.  In this case, treating the underlying disease is recommended.

Natural Treatments That Can Cure Bad Breath:

–       Parsley’s high chlorophyll content converts carbon dioxide into oxygen making it a natural breath freshener.  Chew a few parsley leaves regularly to minimize the foul odor.  Mint herb too has been extensively used in oral care for its germicidal properties.  Alternatively, a few of mint leaves can also be chewed to freshen up your breath.

–       Boil 2-1/2 cups of water.  Add equal amounts of mint leaves, rosemary herb, and anise seeds.  Simmer for 20 min and remove from heat.  Cool, strain and use as a mouthwash.

–       Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties.  Add a few drops of tea tree oil on your toothpaste before brushing to kill germs and minimize bad breath.

–       Apple cider vinegar when combined with water helps to maintain the pH balance in the mouth.  Dilute ½ tsp apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and use as a mouth gargle to get rid of bad breath.

–       The acidic content in citrus fruits stimulates saliva production which inhibits the growth of bacteria.  Consume citrus fruits like oranges, lemon, grapefruit, etc. regularly to fight bad breath.

–       Keep tabs on your sugar intake, the primary reason for tooth decay resulting in bad breath.  Avoid caffeinated and carbonated beverages, alcohol that all tend to make the mouth dry and help the bacteria to thrive.  Drink plenty of water to keep the mouth hydrated.

–       Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco.  Instead chewing sugar-free gum is considered beneficial for good oral health.

–       Much importance or time is never given to brushing teeth most of the time which is a vital step for oral health.  Brush teeth twice a day lasting for 2-3 min and also brush the roof of the mouth to dislodge any food particles or bacteria that cause bad breath.  Visit a dentist at least twice a year to maintain gums and check for tooth cavities.

Bad breath that is persistent and resistant to normal remedies may be a symptom of an underlying disease condition.  Seek prompt medical help for stubborn bad breaths with no signs of downgrade.
